Permanent Resident Card Renewal
Permanent residents must have a valid permanent resident card (PR card) or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. Without one, you may not be able to board.
Your PR card needs to be valid when you show it. If your card expires, you will have to apply for a new one. You are still a permanent resident if your card expires.
Note:
Your PR Card is only for the purpose of travelling. If your PR Card expires, you do not lose your status as Permanent Resident of Canada.

Download and submit the following documents:
Document Checklist (IMM5644)
- Make sure you have all the documents ready as per the checklist before submitting your PR Card Renewal application.
- Tick each box from the document checklist once you have them ready to make sure you don’t miss out anything.
Application for Permanent Resident Card (IMM 5444)
- Make sure every box is filled.
- Please write N/A in boxes that are not applicable to you.
- Make sure on page 2, your personal history is listed in chronological order (most recent to oldest)
Please note that the photographs specifications:
Can change. Always print the photograph specifications and take it with you when going to take a picture (Costco, London Drugs or Walmart)
Are different for every application (For example, you cannot use the same photograph to apply for PR Card Renewal and Citizenship)
If you are getting a message while trying to download the documents that you require another version of Adobe Reader:
- Click on the top right arrow to download the document and save it on your desktop.
- Then go to your desktop and open the document from there.
