Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

Continuous intake enrols eligible clients into LINC classes at any time. Kamloops Immigrant Services (KIS) is a Language Assessment Centre, with TESL-qualified instructors, regulated by CLBPT Assessment and Referrals. We provide CLB language placement, progress and exit assessments 0 – 7 levels and are on schedule for PBLA implementation in 2016. Clients at CLB 7 or above, including those with work schedule challenges are referred to tutors, TRU (university) or labour market partners. KIS follows LINC CLB based curriculum guidelines with Lifeskills and labour market components guiding newcomer integration into Canadian society and local community.

Grammar, vocabulary and communication skills are interactive at all levels. Class activities involve: mock job interviews, role plays, emergency services, responsibilities, rights, guest speakers and fieldtrips. Participants apply essential skills, such as job interview preparation, networking and accessing new media supports. Four three-hour classes run four days a week from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Teachers assess ongoing client progress through Portfolio Based Learning (PBL) and Exit Tests.

Support services such as childminding and tutor services are offered to enable access to Language Training.
